Desire Has Been Given a Bad Name

It seems to me that desire has been given a bad name, especially among some of us “spiritual” types.  And even among mildly counter-cultural folks, as in “desire for money and nice things is the root of all evil.”

THE SEER’S EXPLANATION SAYS THAT DESIRE IS WHAT ACCOUNTS FOR THE EXPANSION OF THE UNIVERSE.

But the Universe, all-that-is, has no desire.  To the Universe, everything is the same.  That’s why we’re here – to have desires that the Universe can fulfill!  In other words, we humans are that aspect of the Universe that has preferences (and wants those preferences to show up).

So then what IS the “root of all evil” (understanding that there is no evil, but one can certainly feel bad)?

I suspect the inheritor of that mantle will turn out to be what we call attachment.  It isn’t wanting what we want that makes us feel bad, it’s our attachment to the results of our efforts to bring them into being.  Our job is to desire, and turn that desire over to all-that-is.  It’s “job” is to integrate that desire with those of everyone else and create new possibilities for us.  But then we have to let go of our pictures of what we want so that we can see the fruits of our desire in what actually shows up.  And given our cultural imperatives, that’s not easy!

What I notice for myself is that what actually shows up rarely matches what I thought I wanted.  But I’ve come to realize, to make real for myself, that what shows up is as close to what I really want as I’ll allow myself, right now, to experience.  It’s really up to me to prepare myself to experience the fullness of what I’ve asked for.  And that preparation always comes down to identifying what I’m resisting… as in “What will others think if I get THAT,” or something to that effect.
